(TRI-CITIES) October 16, 2022 — The Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce congratulates Port Moody Mayor-Elect Meghan Lahti, re-elected Mayors Richard Stewart (Coquitlam), John McEwan (Anmore), Jamie Ross (Belcarra), as well as acclaimed Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West, and all incoming Tri-Cities Councillors and School Trustees, following the October 15 Local General Elections.
"Our Chamber looks forward to working with all the newly elected and returning Mayors and Councillors to ensure our local economy and communities can thrive," said Leslie Courchesne, CEO, Tri-Cities Chamber. "We face complex economic, social, and environmental challenges. We will continue to collaborate with our elected officials to focus on solutions together."
The Chamber conducted a Municipal Elections Survey of its members in the months prior to the election. The top concerns identified were ensuring economic and business-friendly municipal policies, followed by property taxes, and housing affordability and availability. Fifty percent of respondents said their ability to recruit or retain employees has been adversely affected by the cost of housing in the Tri-Cities or Greater Vancouver region.
These concerns were voiced by attendees at the Chamber's All Candidates Meetings. The first was held September 22 at Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam with 197 attendees in person and online. Port Moody's was September 28 at Inlet Theatre, with 310 attending virtually or in-person. Port Coquitlam's was October 2 at Riverside Church with 313 attendees in person and online. The videos of each event were posted to YouTube, and have more than 2,500 combined views to date.
The Chamber is neutral in all elections, as it is stated in its bylaws to not support any particular candidate for public office. The Chamber convenes business, community, and candidates leading up to elections, to foster awareness and dialogue, and to promote voter participation.
