Aster Wellness Centre
Aster Wellness Centre is a health and wellness clinic located in downtown Port Coquitlam since 2017. The owners, James Alexander and Lynn Windels, are both Registered Clinical Counsellors and mental health advocates in the community. Before opening the clinic, Lynn and James were working in the mental health field for several years. But as husband and wife, it was always the goal to build an integrated wellness team that works holistically in support of mental and physical health.
This means Aster does not just focus on Mental Health Counselling, it also focuses on Nutrition Counselling, Naturopathic Medicine & Testing, Acupuncture, Registered Massage Therapy, and Bowen Therapy. Lynn and James have created a clinic that stands out as unique due to its significant focus from the mental health perspective.
Our Mission & Values
Lynn and James started their relationship just as they had completed their Master’s degrees in Psychology. With the theme of self-care always entering the counseling-space, it made sense to develop a wellness-business that contributed to overall healing and growth for clients.
Lynn is familiar with the immigration experience due to her own journey to Canada – often catering to clients who have learned the challenges of stress, anxiety, and depression when undergoing a transition from one point in life to another. James has worked closely with the Canadian Armed Forces, allowing insight into the experience of grief & trauma while building mental toughness under stress, something that many clients want to learn more about.
Why the Tri-Cities?
The Tri-Cities really offers everything we could want (Shhhh, don’t tell too many Vancouverites!). Our business is growing, our home is nearby, and our community offers the best opportunities and comfort to raise a family. Access to the great outdoors in our own backyard is also our best self-care!
How do we support the Tri-Cities?
Our presence in the community offers services that everyone needs for wellness & self-care, a huge part of how our local population has maintained resilience across this pandemic. Part of our mandate also includes the de-stigmatization of mental-health challenges as we consider our access to psychological care a cornerstone of Aster Wellness Centre. Making it accessible, we’ve brought on counselling-psychology students who can offer services at a drastically reduced rate!
How can the community support you?
It’s nice seeing clients make the effort to connect while staying safe by physically distancing. We keep our space sanitized between sessions, so it’s appreciated that clients bring & use their own masks, and sanitize as they enter. We also want clients to know that several of our services can be accessed online if preferable!
Suffering from Digital Fatigue?
With the increasing impact of the digital world, there are no doubts that our senses are being overloaded. However, acknowledging it and addressing the impact that it has on our daily lives are two different things. The reality is, most of us do not have the time to deal with it, instead, we live with it. Due to the worldwide pandemic, working from home and taking online classes have become the new normal. For parents that are now working from home, the additional load of taking care of kids that are now being home-schooled can become overbearing.
Do we just live with it? At what point does the water boil over and we result in high levels of stress, anxiety, and irritability?
In this podcast of the “If I had a Crystal Ball Podcast Series”, James Alexander, CD, MA, Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC), Clinic Director of Aster Wellness Centre discusses the impact that digital fatigue is having on us, and ways that we can reduce the impact, as well as overcome these pressures.
